The International Conference and Utility Exhibition on Green Energy for Sustainable Development (ICUE 2014) was held from 19 to 21 March 2014 in Pattaya City, Thailand. Researchers, engineers, policy makers, etc. from different parts of the world convened to exchange ideas, research findings, and experiences on issues related to green energy and sustainable development. Participants discussed various strategies for achieving green and sustainable future developments. In particular, there was a focus on developing alternatives for the current fossil fuel-based economy that has caused severe problems in terms of environmental pollution, and greenhouse gas emissions. Through organizing two special sessions, GCP-Tsukuba International Office had an active participation during the conference. Overall, 12 studies related to climate-compatible urban development were presented during the two sessions.

GCP together with NIES organized the workshop entitled “Water-Energy-Carbon Nexus in Cities: Drivers, footprints, and implications.” The aims of the event were to enhance our knowledge and understanding of the water-energy-carbon nexus in cities and to facilitate interactions amongst key scholars and build a network with emphasis on Asian cities.

GCP together with IIASA, PIK and NIES organized an international workshop on the topic “Urban Energy and Carbon Modeling in a Rapidly Urbanizing World.”

GCP Seminar where Prof. Sudhakar Yedla of Indira Gandhi Institute for Development Research (IGIDR) of Mumbai gave a talk entitled: Urban Energy and Carbon Intensity in India and Its Determinants—A Household Level Analysis.

GCP supported ISIE Asia-Pacific Meeting and ISIE MFA-ConAccount Meeting (November 7–9 2010, Tokyo) and organized three sessions on urban metabolism, one each day of the conference in order to assist the research community in addressing the urban metabolism and carbon management linkages.

Early career researchers from the Asia-Pacific had the opportunity to participate in a capacity building workshop entitled “Carbon Governance in Asia: Bridging Scales and Disciplines.” The event was co-organized by GCP’s URCM initiative, Earth System Governance and UNU-IAS.

GCP URCM Seminar with two guest speakers: Dr. Diptiranjan Mahaptra and Prof. Ram Shrestha, Visiting Researchers of Hiroshima University. Dr. Mahaptra gave a talk entitled: How Sustainable is India’s Energy System: A Life-cycle and Modeling Perspective, and Prof. Shrestha gave a talk entitled: Greenhouse Gas Abatement Potential and Costs in Four South Asian Countries.

GCP Seminar where Prof. Arnulf Grubler of IIASA and Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies gave a talk entitled: The Global Energy Assessment: Energy and Urbanization and Implications for Integrated Assessment.
