Third International Workshop on Greenhouse Gas Measurements from Space (IWGGMS)
International Conference Hall, Tsukuba Center for Institutes,
Tsukuba, Japan 30th - 31st, May 2006

gosat ロゴObjectives:

      Measurements of greenhouse gases (GHGs) such as carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and other related gases in the troposphere from space are one of the important issues to be achieved in order to promote global carbon cycle researches. However, it is technically challenging to achieve precise measurements of GHGs from space. Therefore, this scientific workshop is held periodically to exchange information on instrument technology, absorption line parameters of gases, data retrieval algorithms, sensor calibration and data validation, satellite data use for inverse modeling, and future technique and plans.

      The First International Workshop on Greenhouse Gas Measurements from Space (IWGGMS) was held in Tokyo in April, 2004, hosted by Earth Observation and Research Center (EORC) of Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA). This workshop fostered interactions between the GOSAT Project and the NASA Orbiting Carbon Observatory (OCO) Team, and hold a forum for identifying areas of mutual interest and possible collaboration.

      The Second workshop of IWGGMS was held in Pasadena, California in March, 2005, hosted by the OCO Team. In this workshop, a broader forum was held to interact and exchange information among the OCO and GOSAT teams, researchers involved in ongoing space based greenhouse gas measurement missions (EOS MOPITT, AIRS, TES, and ENVISAT SCIAMACHY) and those involved in ground based and sub-orbital CO2 measurement programs, in the forum, the next steps over the OCO and GOSAT missions were discussed.

      The Third one in this series will be held on May 30th - 31st, 2006, at the Tsukuba Center for Institutes in Tsukuba, Japan, and will be hosted by GOSAT Team (National Institute for Environmental Studies (NIES), Ministry of the Environment (MOE), and JAXA. This workshop will give an opportunity to share the knowledge among participants. Discussions to seek the future collaborations are also encouraged.

Workshop Format and Agenda :

      This workshop is organized with a series of invited talks, oral presentations, and poster sessions. It will also give opportunities for both scientific and programmatic discussions that can foster future collaborative efforts all over the world.

The sessions will be planned as follows;

  • Ongoing Greenhouse Gas Monitoring Missions (GOSAT mission, OCO mission)
  • Future Greenhouse Gas Measurement Strategies
  • Retrieval Algorithms
  • Calibration/Validation
  • Source/sink Modeling

      * A complete agenda will be provided in the next announcement.
