北太平洋高緯度海域の定期貨物船にCO2観測装置を搭載して実施した海洋表層CO2分圧観測から、ベーリング海南部湧昇域のCO2大気海洋交換フラックスを解析した。観測期間中、海洋表層のCO2分圧の増加傾向が大気濃度の増加傾向に比べ顕著に大きかった。これは、この海域が冬の鉛直混合を支配的要因とするCO2の正味放出域であり、1998年以前は海水温が高くCO2放出が少なかったのに対し、1999年以降は低水温になり、2000年には期間最大のCO2放出となったことによる。また、1997年のような海洋生物生産が大きかった年にはCO2放出が抑制された。
